Leadership
The Presbyterian form of government is a Representative Democracy. Representatives from the congregation are elected to serve on the Session as Elders. Each level of government (Presbytery, Synod and General Assembly) is composed of representatives from the preceding level.
General Assembly
Meets yearly to decide matters of doctrine and interpretation of church constitution, and mediates disputes referred by presbyteries and synods.
Synods
Consider matters referred by presbyteries and hear appeals on all issues except doctrine.
Presbytery
Meets six times per year to decide on matters of personnel, ordination of ministers, church discipline, and whatever pertains to the spiritual welfare of the churches under its care. There are 42 churches represented in our Presbytery.
Session
Is the ruling body of the local church, made up of the Pastors and the Elders. Bidwell Pres has 12 Elders. Some Elders and ordained staff are appointed to represent Bidwell Pres at Presbytery.
Northeast Presbyterian Church (NEPC)
NEPC, as a Presbyterian church, sees the scripture teaching that the church should be governed by a council of officers called 'elders' or 'presbyters' (hence the name, Presbyterian). The local council of a congregation is referred to as 'Session' (the elders hold a 'session' for discussion and deciding on matters). The scripture also teaches that we should be called to care for the practical needs of those in the church. This ministry of service and care is given to the deacons (from the Greek word diakonos, meaning 'servant'). Listed below are those individuals currently serving on session and the diaconate. The Elders are assigned to a ‘ministry’ team and the Deacons are assigned to a ‘team’.
