One of the church members, Jim Vanderbleek, had a vision as to how a display to honor the fallen soldiers should be done. He went to the website “Honor the Fallen” and located the soldiers that had died in the wars and the plan began to take form to honor these brave men and women.
Realizing that attempting to honor over 5,000 soldiers was a daunting task for the Memorial Day display it was scaled back to the 238 fallen Floridian’s who (thus far) have given their life during these wars. The church wanted the display to hit home with the residents of
A cross for each soldier was built and planted in the church yard for three weeks, two weeks before Memorial Day and one week after. The members of the church were involved physically and financially to support the project. Led by Jim, supplies were purchased, crosses were constructed and the display erected.
Thanks to the Honor the Fallen website, Jim was able to add a personal touch to the display. If available on the website a picture of each soldier was obtained, along with name, age and date of passing. This personal touch allows the display to "bring it home" to the community. If the solders photo was not available the branch of service insignia was used.
The display was received with much appreciation and respect by the church members, and especially the community for our "Fallen Floridians".
